Creating Pages

Copy Pages

The templates were created with the minimum number of pages to create a site. The site will work with the minimum pages, but this might not work for your course content. Find pages that will work for your content and copy them as many times as you need to, to create your course. This will be explained more specifically as we move to the individual templates.

The files can be copied using your operating system. Look in the File Menu of your Hard Drive window for a "Copy File" selection.

Select the file you wish to copy, go to the Edit Menu, click on "Copy". Click your mouse in the folder where the file should go, and go to the Edit Menu and click on "Paste".

"Copy" and "Paste" will also work in the Site Window in Dreamweaver. Select the file in the Site Window and use Copy and Paste to create a second copy of the html file.

Rename Pages

Pages can be renamed just by clicking on the file name in the Operating System window or in the Site Window in Dreamweaver.

You may need to rename pages that have been copied.

If you rename files in Dreamweaver, a dialog box will appear asking if you want all links updated. Make sure to click "Ok" or "Yes".

If you are not using Dreamweaver, remember that every time you change the name of a page, every link that goes to that page must be changed. A good suggestion is to set your page names to begin with and keep them the same as you begin to build the site. If you rename pages that are part of the template, links built into the template may no longer work.

Naming Conventions

Some tips for naming your html files and graphic files:

- Keep the names short
- Do not use spaces
- Do not use special characters
- Do not use capital letters

If you follow these tips, it may save some problem solving later.
