Dabrowski theorized that there were five areas in which those who were gifted were often more sensitive in response to stimulus applicated in those areas.   These were overexcitabilities (OE’s) or superstimulatabilities.  The gifted would react more strongly than normal and usually for a longer period of time, when faced with the stimulus of these five areas.  Dabrowski’s research found that It involves not just psychological factors but central nervous system sensitivity.

Highly gifted people tend to have OE’s in all five of these, but different people with different giftings will lead in excitability with different OE’s .  The five areas of Over-Excitability could describe the way some gifted may appear to behave or look oddly comparing to the norm.
