The Human Body Web Quest

Introduction:

On the outside we all are different. Different skin colors, eye colors, personalities, and abilities. But on the inside, we all have the same parts; circulatory (blood), respiratory (breathing), skeletal (support), digestive (eating), and muscular (movement). All are very important and serve different purposes in our body.

One day Mr. Muscle and Ms. Respiration got into an argument.

“I’m the most important part of the body. See how strong I am?” Mr. Muscle exclaimed, using his flexed bicep to illustrate his point.

“But without the oxygen that I breathe you would be a weakling. I am the most important system of the body!” said Ms. Respiration.

Pretty soon all the systems of the body were involved in the debate and arguing about why they were the most important part of the body.

“I am obviously the most important part. I transport all the nutrients that you need throughout the body” declared Mrs. Circulation.

“But I provide the support for all the internal organs. I give shape to the human body. Without me you would just be a big blob of tissues. I am most important!” Mr. Bones grumbled.

Through a mouthful of food, Mr. Digestion spat out, “Yeah, but guys, I’m the one that eats. I process all the pizza and potato chips into useable energy. That is the most important thing for sure.”

Everyone was shouting until they decided to have a judge (your teacher) make the decision, once and for all, about who was the most important system in the human body.

Task:

Because the human body systems are not very internet savvy, they have hired your group to do research about them and their importance. You will gather your information and put together a Power Point presentation outlining the details of the system that your group is researching. You are trying to persuade the judge (your teacher), that your body system is the most important overall.

Resources:

Links and Resources are given within the specific detail of your research plan. Also feel free to use other sources, but make sure to cite them in your presentation.

Process

Once you have gathered together in your groups, locate your specific system below. Investigate the questions for your human body system, and create slides to illustrate this information. Guidelines for the # of slides to use for each question are in italics beside each question. You are welcome to create more slides, but 10 slides total is the minimum requirement. Please include photographs, illustrations, links, audio, and video as you see necessary to enhance your presentation.

Make sure to make an argument about why your system is the most important to the human body.

Evaluation:

See the rubric provided here to understand how you will be evaluated. Make sure to check spelling and complete all the questions that are asked.

Conclusion:

After the presentations the class will participate in a grand discussion to help the teacher decide which system is the most important. Which systems depend on each other? Are any systems completely independent? Are their any clear winners in this argument?
