Pursuing an undergraduate degree in transpersonal psychology
Two options:

1. Go to a school whose BA psychology is focused on transpersonal approaches. I have been involved with the Contemplative Psychology (BA) program at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. It is a fine program.

Burlington College in Vermont also offers an undergraduate degree in Transpersonal Psychology. I do not know about it, but you should check into it, also.

There may be other similar degree programs which I don't know about; if so, let me know.

  • 2. Another option is to get a more general or conventional degree in psychology and pursue your transpersonal interests in a specific course or two, outside your formal studies, and in graduate school. Since psychology is such a broad field, it may make sense not to focus on a particular approach in your undergraduate studies. A good program which will be open to your transpersonal interests might serve you just as well as a program with a transpersonal focus.

For example, I teach in an undergraduate psychology program at The Metropolitan State College of Denver. Each semester I teach a course on Transpersonal Psychology. Other courses in our Psychology and Human Services departments touch on transpersonal topics and practices, though most courses are based on traditional approaches to psychology and counseling. Even though MSCD does not offer a degree in transpersonal psychology, one could get a good background in psychology and a bit of a focus on transpersonal psychology. This is possible at other colleges and universities, too.

    A USEFUL RESOURCE

The Association for Transpersonal Psychology publishes a Listing of Schools and Programs with transpersonal courses or programs. Graduate programs leading to accredited masters and doctoral degrees are listed along with some undergraduate courses and other types of training programs. Some are entire programs with a transpersonal focus; others are more general programs which would support a student's transpersonal interest. ATP, Box 3049, Stanford, CA 94309 USA, 650-327-2066
