Meditation is basically quieting the mind.  The constant chatter in our minds can drive a person crazy.  Meditation is central to Buddhism and Hinduism.  In Buddhism, meditation is a key tool in spiritual development.  It is an essential step in reaching enlightenment.  Shutting the mind from the daily chatter and worry is beneficial to the body, mind, and soul.  The only other time when our minds are free of constant chatter is when we sneeze and when we orgasm.  So remember, sneezes, orgasms, and meditation keep a person from losing their minds...
