Caerthe's Cooks Guild

Caerthe's cooks guild is designed to further the art and science of cooking in the Barony of Caerthe (Denver, CO.)  Usually one meeting per month is facilitated by Mistress Katherine Holford, the guild head.  Meetings are based around a topic, always  include discussion, often there is a hands-on activity, sometimes hand-outs are available, and we always share food.  Garb is preferred, but not required. Experience is not necessary.
Newcomers are ALWAYS WELCOME!

2002...2001... 2000 ... 1999...

December 7

We had a wonderful turnout for the annual Cookies and Carols meeting, Our special guests, the Windhover Bard, Elaisse, and Caerhte's Baronial Bard Fergus did a great job leading us in many fast paced period and close to period carols. Mistresses Kate, Catriona, and Arwen, along with Lady Kseniya, Lords Gulliaume and Petheram, (M'lady?) Sorcha , M'lady Heather, Donna, M'lord Matthew, a newcomer lady I think was called Jane, and myself sang to our hearts content, and managed to cut, decorate and bake a respectable number of cookies.

Happy Holidays and a Peaceful New Year to One and All

November 16

Mustards, mustards mustards. Some with pear, some with cinnamon, some with cider, some with wine. We had a wonderful time making period mustards based on the research compiled by Jadwiga Zajaczkowa at http://www.lehigh.edu/~jahb/herbs/Mustards.html Thank you Jadwiga for letting us use your notes as a handout, I wish you could have been there to taste the results. We had home made sausages, as well as cold roasted meats, cheese and bread to taste our creations on.

October 12

It was such a lovely day, we went into the sunny garden and harvested loads of lavender. Once back in the house a newcomer helped create many wonderful pear tarts, and also an experimental peach tart. It was a fun and laid back meeting for one and all.

September 28

On a perfect September afternoon, a dedicated few watched the autum leaves fall and the new born moon rise. There was much food, the bean paste pancakes were fun to make, the o-cha was hot and all was oishii. Mistress Arwen brought a special treat, period but quite cross cultural

yes, that is the by now infamous Marzipan Sushi

August 24, Sausages for Heroes and Legends

It was a small but dedicated crew of Cats that made 200+ beef sausages for the Cooks Guild prepared lunch at Heroes and Legends. Mistress Catriona, Mistress Kate and THL Gwen Cat spent a full day mixing, seasoning, stuffing, grilling, and freezing their labors. The resulting sausages were VERY WELL received at the event. THANK you for your efforts.

August 10, Bonus Herb Walk

Mistress Agnes de Lanveallei took us on an Herbal Walk in which she told us about the Period uses and significance of the various plants that we saw before us. This presentation was done in persona, everyone came in Period garb and to asked questions in Period fashion. If you keep your old TI's, be sure to re-read her article "On Teaching in Persona" in the Winter 1996 Tournaments Illuminated.
Mundanely, Mistress Agnes is a professor of Botany. You may email Mistress Agnes at: kkeeler@unlinfo2.unl.edu.

July 25, 2003

A most wonderful Middle Eastern evening took place. We had 13.5 attendees and much delicious food, fantastic weather, great conversation and much fun was had by all.

Food included olives, lamb, and a wonderful Persian soup.

June 16, 2003

The Guild had a fun and productive meeting re-creating wagashi [Japanese sweets] Our inspiration was a Summer wagashi. As you can see, while we did not quite achieve the level of the Japanese, our efforts were pretty and delicious.

The full tray of guild prepared treats, Fish-in-the-pond close up [yes the fish is edible,]

May 18, 2003

We had a very productive meeting, creating many meat pies to send off to Grand Outlandish for Their Majesties sustenance. With the busy hands of Lady Kesiynia, Lord Petheram, THL Marged, Master Hagar, a most willing Newcomer as well as Mistress Kate and myself made short work of the project.

April 13 , 2003

Cooks Guild had a festive Russian Tea, hosted by Lady Kseniya. The Pashka was rich, the blinzes delicious, the smoked salmon opulent and a wonderful time was had by all.

March 17, 2003

The Guild met and made cut out cookies from Ein New Kochbuch, for the Heralds and Scribes Collegium.. The hands on help of the attendees was much appreciated, and all cookies dissapeared at the event. Thank you Cooks Guild for a Job Well Done.

February 9, 2003

We prepared meat pies to send to the Estrella War for Kingdom and Barony.

January 5, 2003
We met at the war practice and were able to provide a lunch for all who wanted to partake. Cooks guild offered beef sausages and fruit tarts, the newly elevated Mistress Arwen brought borsht, beef stew, cheese, and more and also delivered some yummy leftovers from the 12th nigh feast to the site. Since an outlet was located, the soups and sausages were served piping hot, a wonderful treat on a cold blustery day. The lack of leftovers at the end of the practice indicates that the impromptu lunch was much appreciated.
