Charles H. Mawhinney joined the Metropolitan State College of Denver in 1991 and currently holds the rank of Professor in the Computer Information Systems Department. He earned a PhD in Business and an MBA from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh and a BS in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. During his career he has taught courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in Management Information Systems, Management Science, and Business. He has previously taught at Bentley College, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Ahmadu Bello University (Nigeria).

He is actively engaged in management information systems research in the areas of Computer Personnel Research, and Information Systems Curriculum and Pedagogy. He has published in numerous journals, including Information & Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Computer Information Systems, Computer Personnel, Journal of Research on Computing in Education, CIS Educator Forum, and ACM-SIGCSE Bulletin. He serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Information Technology Management and Computer Personnel.

He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) the Information Resources Management Association (IRMA), the International Association for Computer Information Systems, and the International Business Schools Computer Association (IBSCA).

His extracurricular activities include skiing, windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking, and camping. He is a board member of the Ken-Caryl Ranch Foundation which is a registered non-profit organization whose mission is to "provide a higher quality of life for the residents of Ken Caryl Ranch" in Littleton, Colorado, through open space acquisition, improving facilities for handicapped and disabled residents, and establishing cultural programs for the residents.
