Consumer Tips of the Decade

  1. Get copies of your credit reports from the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) for free. We have had this choice in Colorado for sometime, but the federal government finally started requireing all three credit bureaus to provide you with one report each year. I suggest that you go to the Federal Trade Commission Web site to start the process (direct link to page). If you trust me, and you should but I'll understand if you don't, then you can go direct to the AnnualCreditReport.com Web site. Beware of similarly named sites. This is the ONLY authorized site, but I urge you to get the link from the FTC site.
  2. Run, don't walk, to the nearest phone and call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688).  If you are like me, you value your privacy.  Credit card companies, other lenders, and who knows who else are buying mailing lists based on information from the major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) so that they may bombard you with credit card solicitations and other things.  You can put a stop to them from scouring your credit history by calling that number.  When I called, I got a voice mail system with three choices.  Press 1 to stop this nonsense for two years, Press 2 to re-enable this craziness, or Press 3 to stop it forever.  My advice?  PRESS 3.  If you choose the "forever" option, they will mail you a form that you have to send back.  Do it.  It will give you a bit more piece of mind.  By the way, this doesn't keep you from getting credit, you just have to authorize whoever to see your data.  We shouldn't have to opt-out, call or write your congress-folks and urge them to pass privacy laws that require us to opt-in if we choose.

Student Handbook

The MSCD Student Handbook is now online.  I strongly suggest that you read over the Academic and Campus Policies for Students (especially the academic dishonesty section, pages 109 to 111, because I take that very seriously).

Need a Scholarship?

Check out MSCD's Scholarship Guide, or why not try the FinAid web site?

Don't forget to check out IRS Publication 970 which discusses the tax benefits for higher education.

Are you graduating soon?

If so, you will probably need a job. Right? Make sure to take advantage of the resources offered by MSCD Career Services. Especially useful is eCampusRecruiter, where you can post your resume and search for positions.

Thinking About Graduate School?
