Investments Class Links - This page has links to sites that I think are especially valuable to students in FIN 3600.  I'm still building this page and it will grow throughout the semester.  Currently, there are over 70 links.

Dr. Mayes' Financial Links - This page is my general financial links collection.  It covers a much broader selection of financial Web sites than the page above.

CareerJournal.com - This site, from the Wall Street Journal, provides lots of career preparation information, articles, and even job listings. No subscription required.

Files Available for Download

Class Notes in PowerPoint Format:

Note that the above files were created in PowerPoint 2002 (from Office XP).  If you don't have PowerPoint, or if you have an old version that won't read these files, Microsoft has a free PowerPoint Viewer available.

Homework Answers:

Chapter 2 Chapter 3

Note: The homework answers are in Excel.  If you don't own Excel, open the file in the lab and print it out.  You may also use these worksheets to create your own homework problems.  Change the input numbers in the spreadsheet and see if you get the same answers doing it by hand.

Stock-Trak Portfolio Tracker - This Excel file can be used to keep track of each trade that you make in both of your Stock-Trak portfolios.  It will be especially useful for the reports that you must turn in.

Sample Index Calculation Methodology - This Excel file shows how to calculate price-weighted, capitalization-weighted, equal-weighted arithmetic, and equal-weighted geometric stock indexes.  It uses the same sample data as in the lecture notes for chapter 5.  I also have a spreadsheet which calculates the DJIA using live data.

Margin Call Examples - Use this Excel file to figure out what portfolio value will trigger a margin call.

Common Stock Valuation - This Excel file shows a valuation of Praxair, Inc as of 6 November 2001.

Stocks & Bonds in a Portfolio - This Excel file shows the good things that can happen when you add bonds to an all-equity portfolio.

Coin Toss Stock Charts - This workbook uses a "coin toss" metaphor for creating randomly generated stock price charts.  It is meant primarily to show that the same patterns (trends, head and shoulders, etc.) that can be seen in real charts can also be seen in simple randomly generated data.  Does it prove that markets are efficient?  Of course not, but it should make technical analysts think twice.

Note that the above files were created in Excel 2003.  They are readable in any version of Excel from 97 and higher.  Excel 2003 is available in the labs if you don't have a copy of your own.  You don't need to understand how to use Excel to recreate these answers.  Excel is merely a convenient format for me to do the problems.  If you'd like to learn to use Excel, you might consider taking my FIN 4200 class.
