How can the paradigm of restorative justice help us re-envision our
legal system and how, with its emphasis on forgiveness, might it help
us deal with the theological/religious element in conflicts. Growing
out of the BTI’s four year series on conflict and reconciliation, a
series of conferences is planned for 1999 to engage members of the legal
and religious professions in dialogue so as to better understand the
meaning of restorative justice and its intersection with forgiveness
and reconciliation.

Center
for the Study and Prevention of Violence
Violence in America has reached epidemic proportions. Today, all Americans
are touched directly or indirectly by violent acts. In response, the
Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) was founded in
1992 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to provide
informed assistance to groups committed to understanding and preventing
violence, particularly adolescent violence. Since that time, our mission
has expanded to encompass violence across the life course.
In an effort to establish more complete
and valuable information to impact violence-related policies, programs,
and practices, CSPV works from a multi-disciplinary platform on the
subject of violence and facilitates the building of bridges between
the research community and the practitioners and policy makers. CSPV
has a threefold mission. First, the Information House serves to collect
research literature and resources on the causes and prevention of violence
and provides direct information services to the public by offering topical
searches on customized databases. Second, CSPV offers technical assistance
for the evaluation and development of violence prevention programs.
Third, CSPV maintains a basic research component
through data analysis and other projects on the causes of violence and
the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs.
Colorado
School Mediation Project
The Colorado School Mediation Project (CSMP), founded in 1987, is a
regional nonprofit organization with national connections which is dedicated
to creating safe, caring and just communities where conflicts are resolved
productively and differences are valued.
We believe that for school communities to
be effective, they need:
to work collaboratively;
to emphasize building social and emotional
skills; to teach and model skills for living
in a democracy; to see conflict as a key
part of growth and learning; and to realize that the free expression
of ideas in a productive, respectful environment is a critical preventive
element for many social problems.
CSMP works with educators, administrators,
youth organizations and school communities to design, implement and
evaluate a conflict resolution education program for their site.
CSMP has worked with over 12,500 students
and 5000 educators through our workshops, trainings and conferences.
Conflict
Research Consortium
The Conflict Research Consortium is a multidisciplinary program of research,
teaching, and application, focused on finding more constructive ways
of addressing difficult, long-term, and intractable conflicts, and getting
that information to the people involved in these conflicts so that they
can approach them in a more constructive way. A joint university-community
program, the Consortium unites researchers, educators, and practitioners
from many fields for the purposes of theory-building, testing, disseminating,
and applying new conflict management techniques. These efforts are designed
to lead to an improved understanding of conflict dynamics, along with
better methods for confronting and managing intractable conflicts and
reaching good decisions.

Restorative
Justice, Healing The Effects of Crime, by Tom Cavanagh
The site provides information about Tom Cavanagh, some dialogue papers,
a case study, a bulletin board and other information. Tom writes that,
"My deepest passion for restorative justice comes from working in the
courtroom for 25 years as a court reporter. The numbers of people affected
by our criminal justice system are not a statistic to me, but the faces
of real people. I am deeply concerned that our present justice system
creates a spiral of involvement for the poor, mentally ill, and minorities
and is losing the confidence of the public. I was privileged to work
in the tribal courts of the Blackfeet and Flathead Indians in Montana.
I was honored to be the first live court reporter utilized in a tribal
court in the United States and recorded cases which eventually established
the sovereignty of Indian nations." Visit and explore this site. He
provides some valuable information. Among other services he has a book
review section and a section on conferences. Tom is from Ft. Collins,
