Minority Over-Representation in the Criminal Justice System

Members of minority groups have been and continue to be over-represented as offenders in the criminal justice system. The reasons for this over-representation are many and range from economic deprivation, a lack of trust in the system, laws that are written by and for the majority in the country and many more. I don't know all the causes, but all that I have listed and others are probably important causes.

I believe that this country is an experiment, an experiment to see if individuals with different backgrounds and heritage are able to live together and prosper. I do not know the results of this experiment, but unless we are able to more effectively and efficiently deal with the problems that exist we are going to have a much more difficult time surviving the next century. Some of the web sites listed on this page may provide you information about the issues involved.

Web Sites:

National Criminal Justice Reference Service

Southern Poverty Law Center

There are many other sources of information and sites that exist, these are just a few. I have offered some from respected academic sources, from the government, and from individuals with differing views.
