Family and Interests - Carol D. Nichols
My husband, Robert, is a former high school English teacher. He now devotes his time to music and writing. He has published one fiction and two non-fiction books, one book of short stories and poetry, and has produced two CD's where he performs music he wrote. His latest works are a book of essays titled Summer Words, 2000 and a collection of five literary booklets. We met when we were children in elementary school. He is an incredibly talented and funny man who has been my best friend for almost fifty years.
Our daughter, Kristin, is an active advocate for people with disabilities. She has written many articles for several national newsletters, been a member of the board of directors of national and regional organizations promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities, and has spoken on these subjects at conferences for doctors, parents, and teachers of children with disabilities. In addition, she successfully holds down a job at a large supermarket, participates in many social events, takes care of her apartment, and keeps up with her interests in movies, music, and writing. She has demonstrated to many hundreds of people that being born with Down Syndrome doesn't mean you can't have a full, productive, and enjoyable life.
Robert and Kristin
are most important in my life. Their accomplishments and activities give
me great pleasure. We enjoy doing things together
and try to take a trip at least once a year. We have been to many European
countries and have particularly enjoyed England and the
Isle of Skye in Scotland. In the United States we like the coast of
northern Oregon. In July of 2003 we traveled to Brazil, spending time
in Rio and then four days in the Amazon rainforest. We traveled to Peru
in December of 2003. We love eating out-- pizza and Mexican food are our
favorites. We try to see most of the movies as they come out. My
favorite hobbies are collecting old stained glass and growing flowers.
Robert and Kristin are tolerant and supportive of these hobbies, but do not
participate in them unless they are forced.

I love animals and I don't think life is at its best unless there is a dog around the house.
