#1: 0 points Read the
five parts of the "Assessment" section of the article "Issues in Literacy
Development" by John J. Pikulski
and J. David Cooper. These five parts can be found in Assessment
and Evaluation Materials.
Read the following sections:

questions to self evaluate. You do not need to

1. What is the new concept of reading and how does it change the way we
think about assessing reading?
2. What is an authentic performance-based assessment of reading?
3. What are four characteristics of the newer assessments of reading?
Assignment #3: 5 points Write a response to the following: The new concept of reading and reading assessment has resulted in other changes. The role of the classroom teacher in reading assessment has also changed. Briefly discuss the new role of the teacher. E-mail or turn in your response to the instructor.

presentation, Informal Reading Inventory.
2. Use the following questions for self evaluation. You do not need to turn in the answers to these questions.
Six of the seven functional reading levels indicate to the teacher at
what levels the student is reading.
a. What are the names of the levels that indicate where
the student IS able to read successfully, but only with help and guidance from
the teacher?
b. What are the names of the levels that indicate where
the student IS able to read successfully by him/herself? At these levels,
no help is required from the teacher.
c. What are the names of the levels where the student
will be frustrated even if the teacher gives help?
d. What is the name of the level which indicates where
the student should be reading?

1. What is the purpose of administering a literacy assessment?
2. What does the teacher do during the evaluation step?
3. What is the third step of the assessment and evaluation of literacy?

B = oral and silent instructional reading levels
C = oral and silent frustration reading levels
4. The levels which text books
such as science and social studies should be for students.
5. The levels which free-time reading books should be.
6. The level the student should be able to read if all of his/her skills are in place.
7. The levels which the teacher should never ask the student to read orally or silently.
8. The comparison of these levels may show a discrepancy.
9. If this level is higher than the oral or silent instructional reading levels, there is some indication that the student is not reading up to where he/she is mentally capable of reading.
10. The teacher must provide the student with before-, during-, and after-reading guidance with this.
11. Even with guidance from the teacher, the student's word identification and comprehension may be very low when reading this.

Regarding what you have read so far on the Power Point slides about Assessment and Evaluation and about the Informal Reading Inventory as an assessment tool, what questions do you have? What is confusing to you? At this point, we have not yet talked about how to administer an IRI. That information will be coming.
