2.  Then read the passage as it was read orally.  The bold text shows deviations from the actual text (the miscues).

Original passage:

The dog is black and white.
His name is Wags.
He likes to run.
He likes to play ball.
He is happy.
I have fun with him.

Passage as read with miscues written in bold print:

The dig is back  The dog is black and white.
His name is Wigs.
He likes to run.
He likes to play
He is hippy.
I have fun with him.

Note:  After this hypothetical administration of a running record, the examiner had the student do unaided retelling and then aided retelling.  For this example, the hypothetical student had strong unaided and aided retelling.

3.  On a blank sheet of paper write what the examiner would write while listening to a student read the passage with the above miscues.

4.  Analyze the miscues.  On the right side of the page, write the "S  M  Vhsp" beside each line where a miscue  and a second column of S M Vhsp where any self corrections occurred.

5.  Circle the appropriate abbreviations to show what cueing systems you think the reader used in the original miscues and in the self correction.

6.  Write a running record report which summarizes what you found out about the reader's use of syntax, semantics, and visual information.  Also, comment on the comprehension of the student.

7.  Submit the paper where you wrote the checkmarks and circled the abbreviations.  Also, submit the Running Record Report from this hypothetical administration of the assessment.  22 points possible
