From: Il Primo libro delle Musche a una due
voci Madrigalli a due voci: Io mi distruggoi was written for harpsichord or theorbo continuo, soprano and bass solo voices. The piece is one of her four secular duets that is included in the collection: Il Primo libro delle Musche a una due voci. It is a through-composed madrigal that is written in a duple meter with one flat. The duet requires singers with "extreme virtuosity," partly due to the nature of its long, swift melismas and ornamentation. The soprano and bass performing it would have to have a highly versatile voice to perform it correctly. The madrigal is similar to the type of work that she would have sung with her husband, Giovanni Battista Signori. "The close imitations between the two voices and the elaborate roulades assigned to each voice in turn closely resemble the musical style of Monteverdi's madrigal, Ohim è, dov' è il mio ben, from his seventh book of Madrigals (1619)." (Cunningham, 1996, p. 227). |
