Achieve Excellence:
Programs and Practices for the Millennium
Choose one (1) of the following for the entire day:
- Lessons From the Heart: Bringing Technology to Physical Education (3rd-12th)
Speaker: Beth Kirkpatrick: current Director of Education and the National Spokesperson for Polar Electro, Inc.
Get to the Heart of Physical Education by utilizing a Polar Heart Rate Monitor in your curriculum. Technology in the gymnasium without sacrificing activity - it is changing the image of physical education by providing motivation and documentation. This workshop will showcase across-the-curriculum lessons, content standards and benchmarks as they pertain to physical education, math and language arts. Class management that includes organization, distribution and information retrieval will also be demonstrated.
- A Vision for Today & Tomorrow: An Innovative Approach to Aligning Curriculum and
Standards (K-5th)
Speakers: Anne Turnacliff and Anne Spalding: Ms. Turnacliff is a Past President of CAHPERD and Ms.
Spalding is the 1999 CAHPERD Outstanding Elementary Physical Educator. Both are currently collaborating with
Human Kinetics on a software program that will help teachers plan and assess more effectively. The program includes
progress reports and assessment pieces.
Throughout this workshop participants will model and practice ideas and strategies to link assessment, planning and
instruction. Particular emphasis will focus on informal and formal assessment tools and ways to make learning more
meaningful to students. Alignment of a K-5 curriculum with each of three Colorado Model Content Standards for
physical education, along with a fourth standard that addresses the social component, will be presented.
- Physical Best (K-12th)**
Speaker: Nancy Raso-Eklund: 1996 NASPE Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and 1996 Disney's American Teacher Award Honoree.
Physical Best is a comprehensive health-related fitness education program to be used in conjunction with existing K-
12 physical education curriculums. This workshop is designed to teach participants about the program and give
information and tools needed to implement it effectively in schools. Significant time is spent practicing the activities and learning how these activities teach students the components of health-related fitness. The FITNESSGRAM assessment and software are also presented.
