Bones are made of two different types of bony tissue.
Compact bone is smooth, hard material that covers the surface of bones. It is thickest around the shaft of the bone.
Spongy bone has small spaces and is more brittle than compact bone. It is found at the ends of bones under a layer of compact bone.
