Meat eaters: Carnivores Dinosaurs
![]()
Carnivores dinosaurs are Secondary consumers. Which means that they eat other animals that eat plants. These dinosaurs typically are more "intelligent" then herbivores, this is because of the skills used for tracking other dinosaurs takes more thought, and planning then eating plants.
Other features of Carnivorous dinosaurs are similar to carnivores in modern eras. The smaller the carnivore the quicker the animals must be to successfully capture prey animals. The larger carnivores may have used cunning and surprise to slowly sneak up on their prey.
- They had sharp teeth, sometimes sheared.
- They had strong powerful jaws used to grasp chunks of flesh from their prey.
- They had talons or claws that were used to hang on and tear into their prey.
- Some were very large and powerful because of the gigantic size of prey species that required more strength to pull down.
- Smaller carnivores might hunt in packs, like wolves and lions, using shear numbers to pull down larger animals.
Loss of prey animals is one of the theories of dinosaur extinction.
