Monday May 19: Royal Copenhagen

7-10 am Breakfast at Cab Inn Hotel
10am-1 pm Guided walk through old city sections to Amalienborg Royal Palace. Professor narrates about the oldest kingdom in the world: Denmark. Observe the changing of guards. Continue to Nyhavn, the old sailor’s quarters on the waterfront, which retains the look and the salty air of centuries past when schooners and whaling ships sailed into the port of Copenhagen. Nyhavn is also where Hans Christian Andersen lived for many years. Optional walk to his bronze statue, the Little Mermaid. Having endured decapitations and misplaced arms, she is still so …. little!!

Tuesday May 20: Viking Civilization

7-930 am Breakfast at Cab Inn Hotel
930-10am Meet at hotel lobby. Walk to National Museum
10am-1pm Guided tour with narrative of Viking tools and artifacts at the National Museum, the former Royal Palace. The most stunning collection is the original, boulder-sized rune stones (erected in memory of the dead), inscripted with the Runic alphabet. The tour continues with stories about the transition to Christianity
1-2pm Traditional Danish lunch buffet at Restaurant Politigaarden.
6 pm Dinner on your own
7pm Looking for a fun night out? Try Tivoli, the oldest amusement park in the world (1843), only 2 blocks from the hotel. Tivoli claims the scariest, tallest, longest, and wildest ride in the world …. trip leader refuses to lead this one!! Tivoli’s gardens, entertainment, concerts, performances, and dining will impress as well

Wednesday May 21: Viking Ship Sailing

915-930am Walk to Roskilde Cathedral
930-1130am Guided tour with narrative of Roskilde Cathedral. Since the early 15th century, the Cathedral has been the favorite burial place of the Royal Family
1130-1230pm Lunch on your own
1230-1pm Walk from Roskilde Cathedral to Viking Ship Museum
1-4pm One hour self guided tour of museum to learn about the conservation and preservation of Viking ships. The largest was built in 1060 and was manned by 60-100 Vikings. Learn how to oar a Viking ship and manage its sails during a two-hour sailing in war and cargo ship replicas along the coast.
4-5pm A little surprise in the park
6-7 pm Dinner on your own in Roskilde
8-830pm Bus from Roskilde to Cabins
Overnight 4-person cabins a few miles outside Roskilde. Cabins are
located in a beautiful fjord environment

Thursday May 22: Viking Daily Life

230-530pm In a simulated Middle Age reconstructed village, actively participate in a variety of Viking activities. Dress like a Viking, act like a Viking, and otherwise do what Vikings did. Activities begin with making a "Viking lunch"
6-7pm Motorcoach to one of Denmark's 400 islands: Mon Island
8-9pm Traditional roast pork Danish dinner at Hovedskovgaard
Overnight Farm stay on Mon Island at Hovedskovgaard which dates back to the 16th century

Friday May 23: Viking Tombs and Tools

730-830am Breakfast at Hovedskovgaard
830-9am Motorcoach to Cliff National Park
9am-2pm Guided hike by professor through Cliff National Park’s beech forest. Walk down 300 stairs to the beach below the cliffs. Search for amber, flint, and other geologic treasures that are unique to the Baltic Sea. Walk along beach to a different set of stairs. Walk up 300 steep stairs to the cliff ridge. Walk through the gardens of Liselund Castle, a small 18th century castle that was constructed as a declaration of love to the owner’s wife, Lise Lund. Box lunch
2-230pm Motorcoach to Viking sites
230-4pm Lecture by professor of two Viking tombs: a dolmen tomb with base stones supporting a huge flat stone. King Asger’s Mound is one of Denmark’s largest Viking graves with a 32ft long burial chamber reached via a 26ft long entrance.
4-430pm Motorcoach to Hovedskovgaard
6-7pm Danish meat balls at Hovedskovgaard
7-8 pm Story-telling by professor: placing myths and legends in a realistic context

Sunday May 25: Beer Brewery

9am-1pm Free time to explore the half-timbered houses with balconies and tiny gardens in Klein Venedig (Little Venice). Lunch on your own
1-5pm Guided tour with narrative of Bamberg’s 900 years of beer brewing traditions. Learn about the history of beer brewing, the beer war, and how beer brewing is still an important part of Bavarian life. The tour includes visits to former and existing breweries
6-7pm Dinner on your own

Monday May 26: Medieval Civilization

930-10am Motorcoach to Staffelstein
10am-2pm Guided tour with narrative of Alte Klosterbrauerei, a brewery attached to the adjacent convent Kloster Vierzehnheiligen. The tour includes a visit to the monastery. The little pub and beer garden behind the monastery offer a glimpse into a simple life, has stunning views, and plenty of hearty bread-and-sausage platters for lunch
2-230pm Motorcoach to Bamberg
3-5pm Choose one of the following activities.
Activity 1: Self-guided walking tour of Bamberg’s incredibly statuesque Altes Rathaus (City Hall) perched on twin bridges in the Regnitz River. The walk continues to the 13th century soaring Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral shrouded with legends
Activity 2: Self-guided tour of Bamberg Beer Brewing Museum located in rebuilt historic caves of a former monastery’s brewing cellars. Historic machines and developments in relation to beer brewing, malt houses and barrel production are on display

1-230pm Walk up a brief steep hill to Rheinfels Castle. Grilled pork with apple cider for lunch in Rheinfels Castle’s Vielharmonie Restaurant
230-430pm On-site assignment at Rheinfels Castle, once the mightiest 13th century castle on the Rhine. Its size and labyrinthine layout is astonishing. Explore several miles of underground tunnels with a flashlight

Wednesday May 28: Castle Culture

6-9am Breakfast at Hotel Rebstock
9-10am Motorcoach to Burg Eltz on the Moselle River
10am-1pm Guided walk with narrative of one of Germany’s most picturesque 12th century castles, Burg Eltz, nestled deep within the forest above Moselle River. Eight towers and scores of turrets crown the castle, which has been owned by the same family for over 1,000 years. There is a moderately steep 30-minute walk to the castle, which can also be accessed via a $2 shuttle.
1-8pm Drive along the Moselle River stopping at various tiny villages right out of the world of fairy tales. These pint-size villages are built below steep, rocky, and cliff-side vineyards. Explore castles, visit wineries, investigate historic sites, or climb the steep hills with views worth all the sore muscles. Dinner on your own.
9-930pm Motorcoach to Boppard

Thursday May 29: Vineyards and Wineries

10am-2pm Choose one of the following activities.
Activity 1: Self-guided hike on an easy-to-follow wine hiking trail through the vine-covered hills of Bopparder Hamm. Trail maps provided for this easy-to-moderate hike.
Activity 2: Self-guided tours of local wineries. Location maps provided for this easy walk.
6pm Dinner on your own

Friday May 30: Rhine River Cruise

7-8am Breakfast at Hotel Rebstock
8-9am Motorcoach to Koblenz harbor
9am-3pm Cruise the Rhine River from Koblenz to Rudesheim. The Rhine’s most spectacular scenery lies on this river section. Dramatic hillsides, fertile vineyards clinging to steep cliffs, and imposing castles dot the landscape. Lunch on your own
5-7pm Local specialty dinner: soup, salmon in riesling sauce, and desert at Rudesheimer Castle

Saturday May 31: Vineyard Hike
7-10 am Breakfast at Hotel Rheinstein
12-3pm Ride a 15-minute cable car ride 985 ft from Rudesheim up to Niederwald Monument. Superb views of Castle Rheinstein on the opposite side of the Rhine River, the Mauseturm in the middle of the River, and tens of thousands of grape vines in the Rheingau. Guided walk with lecture by wine master from Alte Bauernschanke through vineyards and down the other side of the hill to Alte Bauernschanke wine cellars in Assmanshausen. Tour the wine cellars. Snacks and wine tasting during vineyard walk
3-5 pm Wild boar gulasch for dinner with several wines for tasting at Alte Bauernschanke in the heart of the red wine district.
530-6 pm Motorcoach to Rudesheim
