This animation demonstrates the reflection property of ellipses. (See notes below.)

When a photon is emitted from one focus of an ellipse and strikes that ellipse, it is reflected to the other focus. Here, a red pulse is emitted from the left focus and strikes the ellipse. Because the sum of the distances from the foci to an arbitrary point on the ellipse is constant, all of the photons arrive at the right focus simultaneously.
